My name is Kelly Martin and I am the National Employment Manager for The Salvation Army Education and Employment department. I manage 25 employment coaches contracted by the Ministry of Social Development to deliver training to get people into jobs.
My job is to ensure we have full courses and make sure we get the people on those courses go into jobs, it’s about occupancy and outcomes. I review statistics and discuss the result with the staff to ensure we’re giving every opportunity for each person to get a job. I work with staff from Whangarei to Christchurch so although I am based in Feilding I also get to travel to different centres.
I originally trained as a chef and went into mental health work before spending 13 years as a manager with another adult education provider. I also briefly worked as a Work and Income case manager before applying to join The Salvation Army.
I joined The Salvation Army in January 2010 as an Outcomes Manager. Since that job I have also been Contracts Manager, then Regional Employment Manager, now National Employment Manager.
I really enjoy working with the Army. Fundamentally the priorities are right; I really believe in the values and the philosophy. We look after the staff and value everyone’s contribution. You don’t have to be religious to enjoy the atmosphere and values.
